This weekend we did our usual Friday night routine: I worked until 8pm, and then we headed to the German Club for table tennis. Sadly, my game was a little off from last week. Last week I was on fire!
Saturday I had some errands to run, and did some grocery shopping. I did some cleaning at home, and we waited for the internet guys to show up, since our internet died on Friday. They gave us a time frame of between 12-5pm, which sucked since we had plans in the early afternoon with friends. Luckily, they showed up right at 12pm! By that time, Stephan had managed to fix it but we had them double check everything to make sure and they gave us some extra reception...or something. Anyways, it works now! We did some last loads of laundry, then headed out to visit some friends from church. We had a great night with them, and their kids, hanging out, eating chinese food, playing pool and the wii. We ended up staying pretty late.
Sunday was lazy. Church, then a nap (as usual). And a lazy afternoon/evening watching tv and movies, and eating pizza.

I can't believe I forgot....
I left this out in my weekend recap!
On our way home from the German club Friday night, Stephan was driving. He had had 2 beers...to him that's nothing. He's a big guy. We got stopped by a ride program, and they were randomly pulling people over to the side. Lucky us, we were one of those people. Stephan had to get out of the car and do a breathalyzer. Me, I was in the car panicking. I've never been pulled over where someone had to do a breathalyzer. And I was worrying about it causes problems with Stephan and his immigration. I thought 2 beers and he would blow over. So I was PANICKING. Calmly in my seat, but inside I was a mess. Stephan is nonchalantly talking with the cop.
So he blows into the breathalyzer, gets back into the car and waits for the results. The cop comes over and tells us we're good to go. I breathe a sigh of relief. Stephan then decides to ask the cop what his reading was, and the cop said: ZERO! Stephan had a laugh at that! The cop was very friendly, and then he offered us the tube thingy Stephan blew into as a souvenir. Stephan said yes.

Catching up with the Canadiens
What a weekend for my Habs!!
Friday night:
They played an away game against Ottawa. The Habs scored twice early in the first period, and Ottawa came back and answered with a goal. Unlike their last game, they did not sit on their lead! LESSON LEARNED! They RAN AWAY with the lead. They scored 3 more in the second, and twice in the third for a final score of 7-1!
Things I liked:
Pacioretty's goal. Good to see him come back quickly from that hit with the puck a few games ago. And he's really starting to find his stride. He's a big kid, and he's good. I've always liked him, and am happy to see him doing well.
Saturday night:
As I mentioned already on Saturday, this was Koivu's return game home. WELCOME HOME SAKU! I taped it because I was gone, and watched it when I came home. And just like I thought, he got several standing ovations. The camera followed him out from the dressing room, and onto the ice as he warmed up, and while they were calling the Habs names. It stayed on him the whole time, while playing Coldplay's "fix you" with the lyrics "lights will guide you home". Fitting! The fans were already standing for him before he walked onto the ice, with signs saying "welcome home Koivu". I may or may not have cried, and I may or may not have rewound that part several times. After the national anthem, he got another standing ovation.
For the Habs, it wasn't the greatest game. They were down 3-1 by the second, but came back to tie it. The game went into overtime, and then a shoot-out and we lost. Of course we lost, we can't shoot in the shoot-out. I hate shoot-outs. But, this is one lost I wasn't terribly disappointed with, since my captain won on Montreal ice.
Things I liked:
Seeing Koivu back on Montreal ice, although it was REALLY weird to see him in a Ducks uniform. Kinda sad. He has one more season there after this season...maybe he'll come back for one last season with the Habs, to retire a Hab. As it should be. What an emotional game.
Things I didnt' like:
WHAT THE HECK was with the reffing?! Not trying to explain or make excuses but SERIOUSLY.
A very questionable penalty on Pacioretty, which led to a goal for the duck's.
What was worse was the call on Subban. His stick was being held by an opponent (the name escapes me, and I'm too lazy to look it up), blatantly held (which should've been a holding call!!) and when he tried to pull his stick away, and it hit someone behind him and he got called for high-sticking. Saturday we slept in a bit, then had our traditional saturday pancake breakfast! I did some errands and grocery shopping, and made an early dinner of Chili, as we both had plans in the evening. My music studio was having a recital, and some of my students were playing. And Stephan had a boys night out planned in Cochrane. I came home from the recital and watched my hockey game, which I had taped while I was gone.

Welcome home Koivu!!
Tonight is a very important hockey game for me.
Tonight, the Habs play on home ice against the Anaheim Ducks. Why is this game so important? Well, my captain, the former captain, Saku Koivu, MY KOIVU was not resigned 2 seasons ago, even though he had only EVER been a Hab. He signed with the Ducks. And my heart broke. I grew up watching Koivu, he's all I remember. I never thought that he would retire as anything but a Hab, and its still very hard to accept the fact that he won't be retired a Hab. Tonight will be the first time he comes back to Montreal since he signed with the Ducks. His first game in Montreal, not as a Hab. And I have NO DOUBT that he will get a standing ovation tonight.
Koivu leaving was bitter. He'd been on with the Habs his entire nhl career. He went through cancer, and made it back to hockey. He was very lucky. I remember that first game back, and the huge endless standing ovation he got, 8 minutes long. In Montreal, they didn't have the machine he needed for his cancer treatment. So he fund-raised the money to bring the machine to Montreal. He was very involved with the community, although the French Media ate him alive for not speaking French (he could speak French, but not fluently....and why bother, because the media would only rip him apart for NOT speaking it fluently. It was a lose-lose situation). He also got a stick in the eye, and almost lost his eyesight. He came back from that too.
He was not the best player in the nhl. He got a lot of flack for not putting up the goal numbers, which was ridiculous because he was a play maker and set up the goals. If anyone had bothered to look at his assist numbers, they would realize that they were pretty high in the league. What he was was a great leader. Even Don Cherry said so (and he hates the French, and the Europeans...and therefore all of my Habs! haha!). He was well respected, classy. He didn't deal out dirty hits, the players looked up to him. Fans looked up to him. Koivu had won the hearts of the fans. He still has their hearts, at least most definitely mine. And he's a prime example of someone still being able to play the game with dignity and tact. Something which is missing in many players today.
So I look forward to tonight, and am torn with who to cheer for. To me, Koivu is STILL my captain, always will be. And one day, I will have my Koivu jersey, in honor of him. I know that I will be emotional during this game, and I will most likely cry when he steps onto the ice. That's right, I said it. Don't judge.
Here is a link to his press conference in Montreal yesterday, he was obviously emotional. And yes, I cried when I watched this too. Oh how I wish I was at that game tonight!

A sudden urge
I had the sudden urge today to go out and buy a childhood favourite movie: The ORIGINAL, the FIRST The Land Before Time.

Who else LOVES this movie?! I was obsessed with dinosaurs when I was younger. And I mean OBSESSED. Dinosaur blankets, sheets, wallpaper, toys, clothes, books. Everything. And this movie was my most favourite of all. Sara was my favourite. She still is. When we were at the dinosaur museum in drumheller, I saw a Sara and made Stephan take a picture of me with the Sara fossil.

Catching up with the Canadiens
Last night my Habs played against the Buffalo Sabres, and this was a hard game! Shots for each period were pretty even throughout the game. Habs scored first, in the first period and Buffalo tied it. It was a tough battle! So, in to OT the game went! Sadly, Buffalo scored in over time.

- Pacioretty going to the hospital after being hit in the side with a puck :(
- Losing Cammy after a cross check from behind. He ended up separating his shoulder. :( NOT GOOD!
- Gomez's STUPID PENALTY! Why is this over-paid goon always getting stupid penalities, and not doing what we pay him for?!
- CAREY PRICE! The team was getting tired and he pulled out all the stops, and is the reason why we got a point last night!

Catching up with the Canadiens
Saturday night my Habs played against the Rangers again, this time in a home game. Habs won, 3-2 with Price in net. The habs played great (not saying it was perfect, see my notes on the third), and what thrilled me was that they lead in shots 41-33 overall. The first 2 periods were great, Habs lead in shots both periods and offense played well. What I DIDN'T like was, once the Habs had the lead the went and SAT ON IT. This is typical Habs fashion. Just look at the third period if you don't believe me! Outshot 21-12. That's horrendous, and disgusting. It means they slacked, and got over confident. It means they lost focus. It means that the Rangers got 21 of their 33 shots in the 3rd period alone! AWFUL! The Habs are lucky that they didn't lose the game.
Yesterday (Monday), the Habs played the Flames at home in Montreal. And THIS GAME is a prime example of what I was talking about in the Rangers game. Sitting on the lead, and then blowing it. Habs won 5-4, but it was the most awful, gut-wrenching disgusting win EVER. And this is why: The first half of the games, my Habs were dominating. Until halfway through 2nd period, they were leading. And WHAT was the score you ask? 4-0. And then they hit the halfway mark of the 2nd period, and decided that they won and stopped playing. Flames came back to push the game to a tie....The Flames caught up to a 4 goal lead!! 4 GOALS!! It's unacceptable. They pulled Auld from net, and put in Price. The game was forced to go into overtime, and lucky for the Habs the wonderfulness that is P.K. Subban managed to save the game and score the winning goal. I love that kid. I mean seriously love him. He better stay a Hab forever.
But it shouldn't have come to an overtime goal. It shouldn't have come down to the wire. It should have been a solid win. It was everything a game should NOT have been. So even though we won, it wasn't really a win to me. There was so many things wrong with the game that it didn't feel like a victory, but a step backwards.
At the very least, we managed to scrape out another win and now sit 6th in the conference. So I guess that's something to be happy about. All I say is they better not fall apart like last season.

Yet another example of my wonderful memory (sarcasm there, in case you didn't pick up on it). Today I was playing my keyboard, something I haven't done in awhile. I reached for this big, 2 inch thick black book I have of piano hits (an expensive gift from my bf Trish when I was in my teens) and its not there!
So I started to search the boxes I haven't unpacked, and the ones my parents brought me in the summer. Not there. Then I started to think....did I even have it IN my apartment back in Northern Ontario? In my OLD apartment with my roommates? So I call Shannon, my close friend and former roomate. Nope, I didn't leave it at that apartment. If I had it in Northern Ontario, then I had to have moved it with me to mine and Stephan's apartment. So I start to think....and I now I can't even remember if I had it with me in Northern Ontario AT ALL! Did I even move it out of my parents house? I had to have...its one of my main piano books.
So now I'm confused, and frustrated. Either I lost it (which makes me want to cry), or my memory is REALLY getting bad. I can't even remember where I last saw it! Although I'm pretty sure I had it at my old apartment...then again, maybe not?!

weekend recap
This was an awesome weekend, again!
Friday night I got home from work and we just relaxed And I mean, relaxed with no tv and no computers. We turned both off for the night and just sat and TALKED. About everything, anything. We took some time for us, without the distractions of the world. That is, until Stephan went to the bathroom and came out to find me asleep. LOL!
Saturday we slept in. I ran and got some groceries for dinner, as I had decided to do another recipe in the slow cooker. Once I got that going, we ran and did some errands. We came home to the apartment, and could already smell the delicious dinner in the slow cooker! I had decided to try a new recipe I found from a blog I followed: beef stew with beer and paprika. You can find the recipe here. This was the most amazing recipe ever! The beef was so tender it fell apart. The carrots were so soft and tender they melted in your mouth. And the stew broth was AMAZING. The recipe was made for the stove, but I did some research and adjusted for the slow cooker. I put the veggies in the slow cooker first, so they would be on the bottom (as they take the longest to cook), and added the broth. I adjust the broth for 1/2 to 2/3's the amount, as I read somewhere that since the liquid doesn't evaporate in the slow cooker like on the stove, you need less. I added 2/3 of the water called for, and the normal amount of beer. Then I browned the meat as directed, and added it to the slow cooker, with the drippings. I added the spices in the last hour, (except for the garlic, which I added in the beginning) as I also read that if you cook the spices too long they lose their flavour. I also left out the onions, because I hate them, but added onion salt instead. I cooked it on high for 2 hours, and then cooked it on low for about another 4 hours or so. Stephan loved this as much as rouladen, and that says a lot!
We spent the rest of the evening watching a couple of movies, surprise surprise eh?!
Sunday was low key. We ate the yummy stew left overs, and watched another movie.
I think I'm addicted to the slow cooker. Everything is so much more yummy!

Catching up with the Canadiens
Let's catch up for a bit, since I'm gonna actually follow through on my plans to blog on my Habs. It failed miserably while I was working on my Christmas projects.
Habs played 2 games this week:
*an away game against the NY Rangers
*a home game against the Penguins
The game against the Rangers was a win, 2-1. And it was a well played game. Not horrible, not amazing. But good. Auld was in net for his 3rd win in 6 starts and played well, considering that the Rangers dominated the first period. What I was happy to see was the Habs leading the game in shots-on-net. Last season that was a SERIOUS problems, there was very little defence and it was normality to see them completely out shot with shots against them numbering in the 40's and 50's. So this is a definite improvement off of last season.
Yesterday's game against the Penguins was a DISASTER!! 5-2 loss. Horrible. I don't know where the Habs were, but it wasn't on the ice in Montreal, that's for sure! And to add insult to injury, Crosby wasn't even in the lineup last night. Price was in net, and I'm sure the French media will be waiting to rip him apart and blame him for the loss. I would like to point out that defense is to blame too (the never ending defense problems with my team makes me want to pull my hair out in frustration!). Outshot 36-22 (you see?!!).
It's losing games like this that have puts us 2nd in our division, and 7th in the conference. That's just squeaking by with a playoff spot. It's not acceptable, ESPECIALLY when we were 1st in the division and 3rd in the conference just before Christmas.
Hopefully they can pull things together so we place a little more comfortably in the conference than 7th.

Yesterday's game against the Penguins was a DISASTER!! 5-2 loss. Horrible. I don't know where the Habs were, but it wasn't on the ice in Montreal, that's for sure! And to add insult to injury, Crosby wasn't even in the lineup last night. Price was in net, and I'm sure the French media will be waiting to rip him apart and blame him for the loss. I would like to point out that defense is to blame too (the never ending defense problems with my team makes me want to pull my hair out in frustration!). Outshot 36-22 (you see?!!).
It's losing games like this that have puts us 2nd in our division, and 7th in the conference. That's just squeaking by with a playoff spot. It's not acceptable, ESPECIALLY when we were 1st in the division and 3rd in the conference just before Christmas.
Hopefully they can pull things together so we place a little more comfortably in the conference than 7th.

Flower Wednesdays
I'm linking up with Vanessa for her Flower Fridays. Now, I am choosing to do them on Wednesdays as Thursdays and Fridays I work two jobs, and Fridays especially are very hard for me to get on to blog. I only have about an hour between jobs, and then usually head to the German club straight after the 2nd job for the remainder of the evening.

- I figure flowers always brighten up a day, so why wouldn't pictures of them help to brighten your day?!

New Year Blog Resolutions
yeah, I know I'm a little late on this. But better late then never right?!! And since I have a few days off of work (just because I wanted a few days off) I'll hopefully have some time to actually get started on some of them.
1.) Get more followers! I love to receive comments, keep them coming!
2.) Get the section on my Dad's pens up and running. Now, this one is not MY fault, as I am STILL awaiting pictures from my dad.
3.) Actually blog about the Habs. I had full intention of keeping updated with the Habs, which I have. I just haven't had time to blog about it. Once I started those Christmas projects, they took up every spare waking moment I had. Out the window went my Habs posts. :(
3.) Get some background music going. I've been wanting to set this up, but I can't seem to find the right app. I want to play as soon as you enter the sight, but have something on the side for those who would wish to turn it off.
4.) Get some more regular posts going, that become a weekly theme!
Let's see how these go, then I'll see what else I can do.

weekend recap
This weekend was another great one! Friday after I finished work we took our Christmas tree out to the curb. I had already taken the decorations off earlier in the week. and MAN, did that tree make a MESS! Strangely enough, even though the tree is gone it still SMELLS like a Christmas tree in the apartment!
Saturday morning we met up with Aryn and Gordie, the couple we went out for New Years with. They wanted to take us out for breakfast for dutch pancakes at a place called the Pfanntastic Pannenkoek House. It's a really thin pancakesthat come flat on a HUGE plate with all sorts of things on top. There's sweet things like apples and cinnamon, and savory things like shredded potato, cheese and mushrooms. Which is what I had. It was DELICIOUS, I couldn't even eat it all! And its a good price. Next time I want to try something from the sweet side of the menu. Stephan loved it too! It's definitely a place we want to go back to.
After breakfast, we parted ways until later in the evening. I had to do some grocery shopping and cleaning as we were having Gordie and Aryn over for dinner that evening. I decided to make spaetzle noodles and Rouladen, along with carrots and a salad. Since I had the time, I decided I would try the Rouladen in my new slow cooker, instead of in the oven like normal. I talked details with mom, and ran it on high for about 2.5 hours, and then kept it on low the rest of the way. Only thing to note for next time: Make the gravy thicker than I actually want it before I put it in the slow cooker with the Rouladen, as it waters down quite a bit as it cooks.
Saturday evening went really great. Dinner was fantastic, and what was even better was the company. We really had a good time just sitting at the table over drinks chatting with Aryn and Gordie.
Sunday was low key, we just hung out, had a nap, ate left overs and lounged on the couch.

Flower time again!
It's the 7th, you know the drill!!
This months choice: Pink carnations with yellow button-mums! So pretty! I don't usually like carnations, but I loved the colour of these ones. I think carnations might be growing on me...as long as they are not light pink, red or white. Just reminds me of endless bland altar flower arrangements at church when I was younger, because they were cheap.

Deutschland
So, I've always talked about my home but I've never talked about where Stephan comes from.
If any of you have read our story, or my profile then you will know that Stephan comes from Germany. More precisely, Stephan comes from a small city in southern Germany called Konstanz.

On the lake are two islands. One is called the flower island. Its a huge island full of gardens for everyone to go see, and a castle. The castle is owned by a duke. The duke happens to be good friends with Stephan's brother, and plays in a band with him. Isn't that crazy?!!! Stephan took my parents here when they were in Konstanz, the first time they met. Stephan, through the duke, was going to get them inside the castle but there was a wedding occurring so they couldn't get in. Its also called Mainau island.
The second island is called the vegetable island. Here is where farmers grow their crops! I couldn't find a picture of it.
In the winter in Konstanz there are Christmas markets that sell all sorts of crafts. In the summer there are wine fests and all sorts of festivals. And of course, Octoberfest! Not to mention, there are lots of old castles in the area to go see! Like this one:
This is Newschwanstein Castle, within a few hours of Konstanz. This also happens to be the castle Walt Disney based his on.

Konstanz sits on the border of Switzerland AND Austria. Which is awesome because since Switzerland is only 10 minutes away, Stephan's Dad sends us Swiss Chocolate all the time. weekend recap
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
This year we didn't have really anything planned until last minute. It was the first time we were spending New Years together, so we decided to go to a pub/restaurant near by that we both like. Stephan decided to invite someone he used to work with, Gordy, and his girlfriend, to join us. I had never met Gordy before, but the 4 of us really hit it off! We had a great night sitting and talking over drinks. Me and Erin also took advantage of the dancefloor. It was an awesome night, and I think we've made some great new friends. We have made plans already to hang out next weekend. Its nice to have another couple to do something with!
New Years day we slept in quite late, as it was a late night the night before. We got up and decided to go to Swiss Chalet for lunch, we had a gift card from my brother for Christmas. After lunch I was SILL exhausted, and we both went for a nap. Stephan didn't sleep that long...I ended up sleeping for 4 hours! We had a quiet night, rented some movies and got Harvey's for dinner.
Sunday I had church early in the morning and we had another lazy day. Just relaxed at home and watched TV. Neither of us felt like getting groceries or making food, so we went out again for chinese. Stephan has this war game on his computer, and so he taught me and we played a game together. Surprisingly, I turned out to be pretty good at this game!
