Welcome!

This is my blog, and I say mine because I will be the one posting! I'll try to get Stephan to post...but I know that's highly unlikely.

I go the idea from my cousin Rachel. She set me up with the account last night, and so here I am! I'm a blogger now, apparently!
We moved from Northern Ontario (first Stephan moved from Germany), to Calgary, Alberta.
Stephan couldn't get work in my small northern city. I had to leave my beloved lake. It looks like this:

The camp my family has been going to for 45 years

The narrows at my lake

The lake my city sits on (not to be confused with my lake)

Posting these pictures and looking at them, all I can think is "How could I have willingly left this?" But I did. I guess you do a lot of things for love, things you didn't plan on. I can't say I'm unhappy in Calgary. I just miss my home. Knowing that I can't see the lake everyday hurts, but its something I'm trying to live with. Its definitely not something I thought I would ever have to do.

We have been here a month now, and have settled in. Stephan has a job in his field, he just finished his first week. I am working at Subway for the time being, for the summer anyways. In the fall I start as a piano teacher at a music studio in the evenings. I am hoping to get on a school board for the fall, but job prospects in the city public board do not look good (they are laying off 100+ teachers come the fall). There are private schools, independent schools, and smaller school boards outside of the city I am looking into.
But I'm not worried. Either way, I'll be teaching. So I'm happy. I'll keep applying to school boards, and if nothing comes up I'll stay at Subway as a second job and work at the music studio in the evenings.
I also have 3 courses to do for my teaching certificate over the next 3 years, since Ontario's isn't quite equivalent.

Things in Calgary are going pretty good. I have my cousins Johnny and Rachel who live here. They moved out here 2 years ago. And we've made some good friends at my church, and at the German Club we go to. I guess I can say I like it here so far. The mountains are beautiful, although we haven't been up close yet. But its still not my lake.

  1. Hey Jess,
I recognize the first pic totally. Funny how my son now enjoys the summer in that exact same spot with his Papa. Are they still trucking in the sand? I always wanted to swim out to the island. I know why you love it, cold water only and curtains for doors......
