Long weekend

Well, this long weekend is off with a bang!! Literally!

Another sever thunderstorm warnings, and there have already been 2 tornado touchdowns west of Calgary. Northwest Calgary is supposed to get it the worst for the city. Oh, and there's supposed to be hail, AGAIN. Needless to say, my car is safely parked in the garage, since it was damaged by the last hail storm we had. We've gone and rented some movies for the evening and are safely and warmly tucked inside for the night. You should see the sky, its BLACK on one side of the road, and on the other side of the road its bright and sunny. Uncanny.

Our plans for a day at the river tomorrow don't look good, since its supposed to thunderstorm in the afternoon. That cuts into a lot of our outdoor plans for the weekend. And my poor cousins who are out camping in the mountains this weekend!! Ugh. I hope they still have fun.

But on a better note, my parents and brother arrive on Monday. YAY!!!!

AND my interview went well, so now I have to wait and see if I'm accepted...I'll find out in a few weeks. If I'm accepted, this puts me in the applicant pool for potential temporary and probation jobs. And apparently, the school board is young so that means a lot of ladies having babies! Maybe a maternity leave for me?!

Well, storm or no storm, and wherever you are, I hope you have a great long weekend!

Getting the hang of things...

I think I'm starting to settle into a life here. I drove downtown today, during rush hour. And I didn't die from stress. First time ever! Downtown is not so bad here...its nowhere near Toronto, and its totally manageable once you get used to it. Not that I want to go downtown all the time now, but if need be I feel capable in handling it.

I was downtown because I was checking out where my interview is on Thursday with the school board. I wanted to know how far it is from my house, and what the area is like so I don't get lost, or I don't feel stressed for time. I want to keep as calm as I can on interview day. And downtown driving is a stress for me. So I thought this might make it less stressful.

I'm trying to stay calm for the interview, and not over-think things and be myself. But I'm not good at selling myself. And there is a lot riding on this interview, so I feel the pressure. This is the start of my career here hopefully, so I need this to be a positive interview. I can't even think what will happen if this doesn't go well. I'm just trying to stay positive, I have a lot of people rooting and praying for me, so I just need to be calm and confident. That's what I keep telling myself anyways....we'll see how that goes over the next couple of days...

Lazy Sunday

Friday and Saturday were super busy, and it made the weekend feel like it just flew by. So Sunday we just decided to take it easy. I got home from church, Stephan got home from his night out with the boys and we decided to take advantage of a sale at Zellers for buy-1-get-1-free-pillows. We needed new ones, and some for when my parents come. We ended up getting 4 for $25, a pretty good deal I think!

We got some icecream, and stopped to pick up some movies for later in the night. Then we headed to a park by the river that's near our house. Its a really nice area. The one side is all picnic tables and grassy area by the river. And on the other side is trails for walking your dogs. When you go down the trails, you don't even feel like you're in the city. Calgary is really green! We spread out a blanket and just spent the afternoon in the shade of a tree.
I had my bathing suit on for suntanning, but sadly you cannot swim in this river.

1.) there really isn't a beach...its all stones.
2.) the water is FREEZING because the river comes from the mountains
3.) the current is really strong and fast, and there are a lot of random deep spots with undertows that make this a VERY dangerous river to swim in. So instead, people float down the rivers in rafts and drink beer!! Truly, they do! ....I want to do this too.

But even without the swimming, its still a really nice park. I loved being by the river, I love water. Its like air for my lungs. And it made me feel a TINY bit like home. Its now my favourite thing to do. Stephan said if the weather is nice, we will spend all of next Saturday there. I can't wait!! I have a whole picnic lunch in my head planned.

I love weekends

I love the weekends. And not because it means no work...ok, well that too. But because it means Stephan is home, and that is always a good thing.

He came home Thursday, and he was on time this week so that meant I was picking him up from the Calgary location at 5pm. I had to run and get groceries after work so I would have something to make for dinner for Stephan. By the time I got home and in in the shower at 3:20 I had an hour and 20 minutes until I had to leave to get Stephan. I must say, I was Super Woman and Wonder woman combined. In 1 hour and 2o minutes I showered, did my hair and make up, changed, made dinner, folded laundry, washed the dishes and cleaned the bathroom. That's right, 1 hour and 20 minutes! Ok, so I made Chili and that's easy and it meant I could do stuff while it was cooking on the stove...but still.

Friday night we went over to friends from the German Club for table tennis and a bbq. The weather was gorgeous, and it was a perfect evening. We both ended up drinking, and so stayed over at our friends.

In the morning, we headed home and got groceries for tonight. My cousin Andrew was in town, as he drove out with Rachel's brother (who has now moved here). So Johnny had arranged for him, Andrew, Josh (Rachel's brother), Stephan and a few other guys to go to the football game tonight. I offered to feed them and give them a place to pre-drink before the show. I made something easy, Spaghetti.

But do I have any idea how much to cook for 6 people? Nope. Dad said 3 pounds of meat. Knowing Stephan and I (but mostly Stephan) ate 2 pounds of meat with Thursday night's Chili, I thought 4 would be adequate. And I made two different kinds...one with beef/pork and onions. And then one with ground turkey and no onions....Jessica safe (I hate onions). Holy crap, did I make TOO MUCH food!! I mean, my family eats a lot. I was counting on them eating a lot. And they did, but man...I guess they are coming over for left overs tomorrow. Either that or I freeze the sauce.

I also had an appointment today at a clinic to see if they'll take me as a patient, which they did so I have a doctor now! Score! I didn't have one in North Bay, there was a doctor shortage. I was on a waiting list for the past 2 years.

When I got home from that, I started cooking for the boys. Stephan ran to the bank and to the Edelweiss. Well he was there, he bought me a bag of German gummie bears that I like as a surprise! It was super cute! :)

So the boys have left for the soccer game, and maybe a bar after. And I'm here by myself. I think I might take the chance to watch some chick flicks. And eventually wash the dishes, and practice my church songs.

Right now, I'm watching a Victor Borge special on TV, I'm pretty excited about it. ....but I really don't want to was the dishes. At least I had the sense to give them paper plates :P haha!

Wednesday Thoughts

1.) I have a leak in my bathroom, it is coming from the shower up under the tiles through the grout. The plumber came, and hopefully temporarily fixed it. After my parents leave they will dig up the floor and inspect the damage and repair. Hopefully the temporary fix holds out.
Oh, and the plumber is a Habs fan. We had a nice conversation.

2.) I get to see my cousin Andrew hopefully this weekend! YAY family!

3.) Speaking of family, my parents and brother arrive here in 12 days. 12 DAYS!! I can't wait! I am super super SUPER excited to see my brother especially! He's bringing his guitar, and playing 2 new songs for me that he learned. And, he hasn't been out here so I'm excited to show him some of the sites. He's really excited to see Banff. Keep your fingers crossed for some nice weather!

4.) I'm hungry, and too lazy to make myself any food. I don't feel like cooking. And money is tight, so I don't feel like buying anything. Plus, that would also involve getting off the couch and going outside. And as I said before, I'm too lazy today.

5.) I heard the icecream truck a few blocks away. Back home, its a Dickie-Dee guy on a bike with a little thing full of icecream and a bell. Here, its a big white van that plays songs such as Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Oh Come all Ye Faithful. In July. I like.
I also almost ran after it, but there was numerous fences in the way. I really wanted some icecream from the icecream man. I felt my inner kid come out, and was reminiscent of church picnics and Dickie-Dee icecream.

6.) I miss Yvonne, and my horse. And Stephan. But Stephan comes back. And Yvonne is far away, and Blaze is....well....I printed off pictures of him, because that's all I'll ever have again. Most likely anyways.

7.) FYI: just because I miss home, doesn't mean I'm dissing here. I like it here, and I like the mountains. And the many other things I can do here like Spruce Meadows (love!), and the dinosaur museum, etc. I just miss home. I miss my people.

8.) I wanted to walk by the river last night, we found a really nice park near our house on Sunday and spent some time there. But this is Calgary. And dinner time, or after, I cannot go out to secluded parks by the river and walk by myself because things can happen. Even in public parks out in the open, things can still happen.
This is not something I'm used to, because you could go out at night back home anywhere by yourself, as long as you didn't go on a path into the bush. I like to be near water, and it frustrates me that I can't go because I don't have Stephan here. Water calms me, and makes me happy. And its so close here, but so far away at the same time. I need to get used to being in a big city like this.

yeehaw Cowboy!!

So the Calgary Stampede just ended. Stephan and I decided to go on Saturday, and take advantage of the one day it wasn't raining. We slept in, had pancakes for breakfast (its a favourite Saturday morning thing), and then headed to the Stampede after lunch.

We found a cheap parking spot and walked to the grounds. We didn't really have a game plan for the day, we were just going to wing it. We passed through the rides section, and opted not to go on any. It was way expensive and overpriced. Besides, my parents and brother are coming out to visit at the beginning of August, and we want to save our money to do some stuff with them. I did check out the games where you can win teddy bears. We were supposed to go to the fair in North Bay, and Stephan was going to win me a bear. But it didn't happen. So he still owes me a bear from the fair. But, sadly, I didn't like any of the stuffed animals at the bear. So I am still waiting for my bear.
We checked out the barns with the animals, and Stephan checked out the girls. You can go see them on his facebook album (of which I am not impressed because there are no photos of me in this album, but he's a boy and what can I do? He just laughed at me. I would like to point out that he took those photos when I was standing next to him. Feel free to make comments on that and side with me). I also had to drag him from one girl who was dancing on the street, and he was looking over his shoulder as I dragged him away. I'm not sure about this Stampede thing next year, I might have to blindfold him. Or tie his hands. No more pictures. I think next year I will be the only one with a camera allowed to take pictures.
We also checked out the military display, which Stephan thoroughly enjoyed. Too much. I had to restrain him from signing up for the Northern Rangers in the middle of no where to live in a tent in the middle of winter. Its this wild dream of his, to live in the North in the middle of nowhere with no people around and live off the land. Me...I think it would make a nice vacation and then we come home.
We saw a band playing, with a drumkit on wheels. They were coreographed and everything, and they were really good. Some songs include: Black Betty, The Vanga Boys, We want the Funk. We also checked out the country history museum.

We grabbed some food...we kept it cheap, didn't eat too much. We did splurge on some $5 icecream though. And we got handed some coupons just for wearing cowboy hats....I got a $5 coupon for a restaurant, and Stephan got a $20 coupon for the spa. I think we should switch, because I'm a girl and girls go to spas and I want a pedicure. Stephan said no, he wants to get a massage.

After dinner, we bought tickets for the Chuckwagon races and the Grandstand show. There was only standing room left, but the tickets only cost $15 so we were fine with that. We were early to the show, we wanted to ensure a good spot on the rail, so we sat down awhile first. When it came time to the spaces, we were right in front on the rail by the finish line as they came around the bend. And man, was it awesome! Those horses can fly, they whipped around that track so fast you wouldn't believe! And did you know they are Thoroughbreds? I mean, I wasn't surprised that the outriders were...but the ones pulling the wagon too? It just seems weird to think of english riding, flat-racing horses being used for a western-sport to pull wagons. I was expecting them to be racing with something like Quarter horses. Thoroughbreds will always make me think of the Kentucky Derby and Breeder's Cup. Oh, and we saw the Budweiser Clydesdale!
After, it was the Grandstand show. And it was AMAZING! I loved it! Eva Avila sang, and so did the girl who's the star of Broadway's The Lion King right now. And there was a Michael Jackson tribute with Canadian dancer Daniel 'Da FunkyMystic' Celebre who was supposed to tour with MJ and had trained everyday with him for the last 3 months of his life. They had acrobatic stuff with Silk ballet dancers (where the girl was hanging across his feet, in mid-air no harness!, while he was holding onto those silk things!!), and the Russian Double Bar which was like gymnastics on the bar, except the girls were jumping on one held by a guy at either end. It was super cool, and one girl almost fell at one point. There were motorcycle tricks, and kid dancer and singers which were cute but Stephan found it cheesy. And it was, I guess, but its kids so cheesy is cute.

And at the end, there was a HUGE fireworks show. I haven't seen fireworks like this since I last saw them years ago up at the University in Waterloo. They were definitely better than what the City of Calgary put on for Canada's day.
It was a great day, and we had tonnes of fun exploring the stampede. I plan to try to put up some videos I took. If it works, I apologize because my camera is old and there is no sound on the videos. But they will give you a good idea of the racing, and the fireworks and some other evens in the grandstand show. Next year we plan to go see more of the rodeo events during the day, like the bull-riding and the broncos. I think I MIGHT let Stephan take his blindfold off for that part.

P.S: I think I look pretty good in a cowboy hat. I think Stephan does too, which is why he shouldn't be allowed out without me by his side....

Wednesday Thoughts

Today, well...I don't know if I have a word for today. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. It was just...another day. Here are some thoughts:

1.) The hail storm put little dimple marks all over my car. Luckly, insurance covers it...if I can come up with the money for the deductible. I decided the storm is now not-so-cool.

2.) Customers are dumb. Well, some of them. They don't listen. They do things like this:
Me: "Would you like Swiss, orange chedder or white chedder on your sub?"
Customer (choose 1 of several responses): "Provolone", "Mozzarella", or "Chedder" (which one?!! I gave you two kinds of chedder!!) And this happens all the time...about every 2 or 3 customers. Did you not hear the options I gave you?!! I've even repeat the options at times, and they still ask for a cheese we don't have. Or they ask for white-swiss...as opposed to the orange-swiss I offered them....right.

3.) Stephan's company needs a labour-market opinion in order to hire him as a foreign-worker, which in turn Stephan needs for his application for a new work permit. This week, the LMO was declined as his employer did not supply the right/detailed enough information, which means his employer now has to go through the process of doing a brand-new job ad for the LMO, and let it sit there for 2 weeks before they can re-do the LMO application. In the meantime, Stephan's application for a new work permit could be refused because of the first LMO application, in which case he would have to stop working while all this paper-work gets sorted out.

4.) The government said Stephan needs to be paid more. I hope this doesn't become a problem with the employer...that being said, Stephan is the only one qualified who as applied for this job, and they like him and want him there to train other Power System Electricians. So its not like they have anyone else....but I worry, how many employers actually want to go through all this hassle for 1 employee? I keep hoping that the fact that Stephan is the only qualified worker who has applied will keep them going with all this crap.

5.) The immigration office actually told, and wrote down on the declined LMO, that Stephan would have a better chance of getting a positive LMO if he were a MINORITY. Is that not racial discrimination? I mean, I know they have critera and quotas to fill but to actually put it in writing?!!

6.) Because of #4, this country is really starting to piss me off. When the minorities and immigrants start to have more rights, then it becomes ridiculous. And I am not racist. But if you expect things to be like your country from wherever you came from, then maybe you shouldn't have left or moved to Canada. Because I don't think I would be able to go to...say, India or China, and have that country change its laws for minorities like me to "make everything fair", and have more rights than its citizens. It just wouldn't happen anywhere else, so why does it happen here? Sometimes I want to leave....

7.) And when someone who can half-speak English, and will only work a minimum wage job and have to depend on others or welfare gets into the country without any trouble and in a short amount of time, and my boyfriend who has a trade (that is in DEMAND out here!), and can speak perfect English and support himself has to jump through endless hoops to try to move here, and may not be able to because a job ad wasn't done correctly, then I think it is stupid. And I hate my country a tiny little bit for it. Ok, I had to rant a bit there.

8.) I hate that our future together depends on this dumb situation and country. I would like to start my life, thank you very much, but its on HOLD until all this gets sorted out. Which could take years. And that makes me angry.

9.) Is it bad if I cry because I think "it's not fair"? Because really, it isn't fair at all.

10.) And be angry? Because I am, it makes my blood boil.

11.) This just sucks....and I'm contemplating moving to a country that's easier to deal with, where we would have an easier time being together. Anyone know where that might be?

12.) Am I a horrible person for thinking like this? Because I feel horrible sometimes....its just so unfair.

13.) I'm glad I have church tonight...maybe I'll get something from the service to help. Or I can at least forget about it for a few hours.
